I became friends with this guy from work. He was religious (Orthodox Christian) and a bit nuts. One day he comes up with the whole young earth thing.
I approached this as follows:
If you do not accept the age of the universe do you accept the size?
(he went off to his priest and confirmed a week later he was AOK with the size of the universe).
I then asked if the nearest Galaxy to us (Andromeda - the only one we can see with the naked eye) is 1.5 million light years away - how can we see it? The light should have only travelled the 100,000 or so light years he seemed to think the universe was.
He went back to his priest and came back to me with:
"God made the universe with the light already in transit."
That was the end of the conversation - I simply stopped - he thinks he won but in truth I simply could not be bothered to address the insanity. I merely said "I see," and left it there.
