After running my errands, I walked into a shoe shop to do some shoe shopping.

Everything was fine and I was happy (as most sane people are, when surrounded by shoes), then this song came on. I've never heard of it before, and I can't recall the lyrics. But the whole song was about how when you pray to Jesus, and nothing happens to fix whatever it is you need fix, you shouldn't lose faith, because god is working behind the scenes, in the meantime just keep praising god.

And I thought that was so stupid. It was basically telling people whether or not god responds to prayer, just keep praying. What a shit way to deal with a shit situation.

Anyway, then I found this pair of black knee-length boots with 4 inch heels. All was good.

I'll bet you were secretly praying for those boots.

Actually Satan tells me when the clearance sales are and I just show up. If I sacrifice a chicken he reserves my size for me. It's a very reliable system.

I became friends with this guy from work. He was religious (Orthodox Christian) and a bit nuts. One day he comes up with the whole young earth thing.

I approached this as follows:

If you do not accept the age of the universe do you accept the size?

(he went off to his priest and confirmed a week later he was AOK with the size of the universe).

I then asked if the nearest Galaxy to us (Andromeda - the only one we can see with the naked eye) is 1.5 million light years away - how can we see it? The light should have only travelled the 100,000 or so light years he seemed to think the universe was.

He went back to his priest and came back to me with:

"God made the universe with the light already in transit."

That was the end of the conversation - I simply stopped - he thinks he won but in truth I simply could not be bothered to address the insanity. I merely said "I see," and left it there.

Have another story to share. So today in a neuro pharm class, prof told us that he had a friend who was very religious. So my prof asked his friend how he deals with the disconnect between science and his religion, namely the age of the earth (I think his friend is a scientist too). And his friend said: Monday to Friday I act according to your (science's) rules, and Saturday and Sunday I act according to mine.

Didn't make sense to me. Prof said that's how it should be for those students who wants to believe in a "soul" during the course, because we won't be dealing with it.

Actually it is quite uncomfortable to study neuroscience/psych if you're religious, because as you do so it becomes harder and harder to believe that there's this separate entity (a soul).

Not sure how one could be amazed at stupidity and ignorance.

Usually my reaction is sadness for them for about 1.2 seconds then humor that they have other options and ignore them, and in the end I forget about them quickly because they are of no importance. Why would I even want to find people like this to talk with just to point out how ridiculous they are.

When I was about 17 I went to visit a church of god revival so I could see my then girlfriend. In the middle of the sermon TBI and state troopers entered the church and arrested the evangelist for counterfeiting and other assorted crimes. Despite not knowing the evangelist too well as he was from out of the area, the congregation defended him and I was afraid that the mob would attack the cops. They were yelling and screaming at the cops who were showing tons of patience. It was a surreal moment in the middle of the church.
