When in crisis, most societies tend to lapse into embracing whatever give them emotional comfort and familiarity without killing them too directly, and will do so at the expense of fundamental solutions to problem that led to the crisis in the first place.

Religion didn't survive and prosper by failing to dovetail with this behavioral tendency of human population in crisis.
