Politeness is good, though for you wouldn't have been able to change her mind. Sounds like you did the right thing at the time.
To me, coming from a religious life, I understand the mindset of following a holy book over a science one. I left it because to me, I realized it was all a lie and I could no longer accept practicing rituals to support a lie. But, before I realized the lie, I thought it was truth. So, the moral of the story is -- not until I left religion, did I ever feel "enlightened."

(So, to the OP -- creationism isn't a theory because it can't be supported by facts. Holy books can't be considered factual evidence.)
