OP, what's more respectful: the person who thinks of others as mature adults with whom he can open up with his true thoughts on an issue, in his own specific parlance, without feeling the need to mollycoddle or obscure his thoughts for fear of somehow destroying the person he's talking to, or: the person who thinks of others as too weak willed or unable to defend their ideas that he deliberately holds back, as though they are less worthy of hearing his arguments and defending against them?
You're not being respectful, you're being condescending. If I was talking to you and I knew you were holding back because I'm far too delicate to hear what you actually think, I'd be pissed. You aren't talking about respect, you're talking about deliberate dishonesty with the aim of not hurting the feelings of people you're drastically underestimating by turning them into these dainty little shits who must be freed from criticism if it's too harshly worded.
