If I am to go by what the Christians here say, the whole point of seeking god is redemption of sin, which doesn't make sense if being "clouded" in sin prevents you from finding him. But the problem with that is if you ask 10 Christians a question, and you will get 10 different answers.
I would say your friend has just created an ad hoc excuse as to why you can't find him and he/she can, so your friend doesn't have to except the fact that he/she has deluded him/herself. The brain has all kinds of defense mechanisms to keep it from accepting that its worldview is false, and rationalizations like that are one of them.
