It's really easy to create and nurture guilt when you try to attach it, divinely, to instincts and actions that almost everybody has, and indulges in automatically, not to mention actually wanting to do, 'cause it feels good.
Another layer on that large onion called control. Sometimes I think the authors of these religions knew a little more then we give them credit for.
