Scientific theory = fact that has been proven over and over and over again, but is still open to be "proven wrong")I think a scientific theory is more of an explanation of the facts based on study and experimentation, not the facts themselves. The theory can be modified or, in extreme cases, changed completely as we learn more. But the facts remain facts.
As for conspiracy nuts, I know a couple. The ones I know tend to be a bit more self-aware, but it doesn't stop them from making people uncomfortable from time to time (one of them made our realtor a bit nervous when he started in on how the "chem trails" in the sky were part of a government plan to... I don't even remember what he thought they were doing, but it was bizarre). I admit it's kind of funny to see the look on people's faces when they realize they've stepped into the twilight zone.
Personally, I tend to humor them as long as I think they're safe to be around. Most conspiracy nuts seem to be happy enough just talking, and as long as they stick to that they're okay. When they start stocking up on ammo and rifles and cans of dog food, then it's time to worry.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
