I am currently in East Asia right now and I'm a Buddhist, Certainly Buddhism in Thailand, Burma and Sri lanka is closely associated with Nationalism. Certainly China is going through a massive Buddhist resurgence tied to the rising of a new middle class. I have no idea what you mean by 'Most authentically Buddhist country'.

China as a country does not use Buddhism because it has no official religion. As I said Buddhism is growing, as is Taoism.

The two most dominant countries in the region are Japan and China neither of which have Buddhist governments or governments that talk about Buddhism. Authentically Buddhist means where the government promotes Buddhism as a tool of power to impact behavior and rule. So yes, I do think Tibet was the most Buddhist when compared to Thailand or Sri Lanka but that's not an important point at all. If middle class Han Chinese are Buddhists now -- is there an underground movement to help Tibetan Buddhists escape Han Chinese repression?

Well, first I think you meant to say "show that Western governments are more competent." I'm not trying to insult -- just make sure I'm answering what you meant to say.

No where have I even suggested that Western governments are more competent. There is a great argument for that, but that's not my point at all. I won't debate that since it is not what I'm saying.

My point is that East Asia whose dominant powers are China and Japan are super homogeneous -- and not interested in outsiders moving there in large numbers. They have ethnically constructed government ideologies. As a person of European heritage -- I would not be accepted and could never be Chinese or Japanese. The idea is silly to even consider. How can a region that does not allow outsiders to fully convert to their cause ever be truly attractive outside of its area? Islam at least allows someone to join from any background -- and it is bullocks. When China or Japan accepts millions of African and South Asian immigrants as equal citizens under the law like the United Kingdom does, then perhaps East Asian ideology has matured to the point where it is relevant to 3/4 of humanity.
