I'm pretty sure the Isrealites believed in a physical heaven. His throne was meant to be atop the solid firmament of the world. This whole spiritual place idea had to come about at some point when we once again constructed buildings reaching the clouds, and built airplanes.
It's just another case of changing what the bible says to conform to modern information and beliefs. Like how people will say it never condoned slavery, when it gives a detailed description of what you're able to do to your fellow human beings as far as servitude goes.
