Yes, you are mistaken. We are not, I presume you meant, descended from apes. Saying that we are descended from modern day ape species is like saying you are descended from your cousin.
Both ourselves and the other species of apes are descended from a common ape-like creature.
By the most current information we have obtained so far the common ancestor of chimps and humans was much more human-like in many respects than chimps.
