Yes Abram was from Mesopotamia. Which supports everything you just said. But then called out to Abram and told him to move to the land of Canaan. He did. Upon doing this God gave him a new name Abraham. So when one refers to Abraham he refers to Abram post move to Canaan.

And this makes total sense because obviously the god that rolled out the heavens just for the pleasure of those on our little planet for the one and only species he gives a damn about, obviously it is actually really only interested in one small faction of that species living in the one place he deemed special which He was concerned with. The message is clear: move to Canaan or go to hell.
