I think it stems from parents giving their children a sip of alcohol to help get them off to sleep. I have no evidence to back that up other than hearsay, but it makes sense.

WE were allowed a sip of dad's beer from the ages of 2 to about 5. I didn't get shitfaced until I was 7 and discovered that flagon of port in a wardrobe. My mother told me years later that she was astonished that such a small child could hold so much vomit.
