I'd say it says a lot about the general level of education of the people about their own inner brain operation and on how easily it can be fooled... and, as all such fooling... it (the brain) is seldom aware that it is being fooled and accepts the event/operation as reliable.
It is my opinion that humanity's early extraordinary experiences fall under such brain trickery and subsequent misunderstanding of these experiences.
As more and more people accept such misunderstanding, it becomes normal and people gather around that idea.
Some people dress it up as a very appealing idea and a religion is born.
From this arises the word many of us usually use to describe believers: delusional.
