I really really don't understand and can't relate to this hate motivation for belief. It goes against everything I believe as a Christian.

My reason for not thinking that it's that God is primarily a God of love. This is his root attribute. Nothing else pans out without that. Jesus reason to exists is to bring life. Fear takes away life. Hell is living in fear. Indulging in what takes away life is living apart from God, because God wants you to realise your potential. Fear achieves the opposite of that.
