So what are the symptoms now padraic besides the lack of sound? Exclamation/s next to the device in device manager? (sometimes you can update the driver from the web if you're lucky) Device not selectable in audio settings? In Control Panel > sounds... can you play the standard windows sounds... do they look like they're playing I mean?
Yes the Catalyst driver seems to be stuffed. Can you re-install that?
If you right click "My Computer" > manage > event logs > Application Logs and System logs ....what are the red/ yellow errors?
You can do a system file fix by running at a command prompt : sfc /scannow
(System File checker) ...you'll need your XP CD in the drive... this will repair all the core system files ...should take about 20 minutes
The OS repair from the XP CD isn't so bad either :
1. Do Not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R"
2. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
3. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
4. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
