NOW I have no sound!

Did you get the right drivers off the CD? There's sometimes a choice. You can also go to Dell support, enter your service tag and it'll list the relevant drivers :

Googling (which I always do before asking for help) indicate this is a common problem after a format and reinstall. I am also getting an error at startup; "Failed to load resource file, check set up". I DID get an error message from ATI, I think the catalyst control. On a forum some guy claimed he fixed the sound problem by doing a repair with the OS disc. That's a bit drastic at this stage. No sound is an irritation, not a catastrophe. The unloaded resource file has made no noticeable difference to performance.
Not to make you sound like an idiot, but you have checked that the sound is enabled / turned up on Windows right? I'm not insinuating anything; I'm just saying that I've had people with problems like this before and it turned out they had the audio disabled.

I AM an idiot when it comes to computers. My problem solving modus begins with checking things are plugged in. Then I check the system, using troubleshooting if available. I did that, and checked the sound settings. The system does not recognise the hardware.
So what are the symptoms now padraic besides the lack of sound? Exclamation/s next to the device in device manager? (sometimes you can update the driver from the web if you're lucky) Device not selectable in audio settings? In Control Panel > sounds... can you play the standard windows sounds... do they look like they're playing I mean?
Yes the Catalyst driver seems to be stuffed. Can you re-install that? If you right click "My Computer" > manage > event logs > Application Logs and System logs ....what are the red/ yellow errors? You can do a system file fix by running at a command prompt : sfc /scannow (System File checker) ...you'll need your XP CD in the drive... this will repair all the core system files ...should take about 20 minutes The OS repair from the XP CD isn't so bad either : 1. Do Not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R" 2. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations. 3. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. 4. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact. RE: NOW I have no sound!

Well done pad.
I'd recommend (free) to backup your entire drive now so if your PC goes tits up again, the restore will be simple as. (Another option is Paragon Drive Backup Express - there's a ready made CD image of it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?jxmjvnnmlud ) (April 2, 2010 at 5:12 am)fr0d0 Wrote: Well done pad.
