But, Christianity thinks it has the market cornered when it comes to the idea of sacrifice and self denial. Meanwhile, well over half of Americans classify themselves as Christian yet there's so much poverty in the states?
Yes. Soooo much sacrifice and self denial going on there.
It is impossible for men by an exercise of will to deny themselves, to die daily to themselves and live for the sake of others for love.
The numerous evils of the world are evidence to this. People covet so they kill, they love pleasure so they use drugs and commit fornication, they lie to get ahead, they mock to insult, degrade to lift themselves up.
If I return evil for evil, cursing for cursing, violence for violence, hate for hate then I am no different than the one who murders or steals or rapes or lies.
A tree is known by the fruit it bears.

You then justify this evil by calling it duty?
How are you any different than the one's you judge to be worthy of disdain and hate and mockery?
The only way to confront the ridiculous is with ridicule.
Why not confront it with reason and charity?
Ridicule might make you feel good about yourself, but how is it edifying to the one you ridicule?

The only way to confront the ridiculous is with ridicule. How am I different? It's very easy. I'm not judging your thoughts and intentions and condemning you to hell for them. I'm only judging your words, which at this point, deserve all the scorn and mockery they've received.
Because I say we should love one another?
This merits scorn and mockery?
