I think in a lot of ways a degree has become a prerequisite for simply getting a job, whether your degree is applicable to that job or not. Some professions flat out require a degree in their field to even be considered for an interview (Lawyers, architects, the sciences, etc.). The college degree has become the new high school diploma.
