After reading numerous stories from ex-christians I have found that sometimes a hard approach works. The aunt may not see that she is just using her religion as a lame excuse for bad behavior and just needs someone to point that out to her.

In my experience, pointing things out to religious people has no effect on the way they think and act.

I think it depends on the individual. I have never been religious -- life-long atheist, and so there are some things that I really don't get. I realize that in someone like your aunt, the denial is super-heavey-duty and there is no way that she would be willing to come to terms with the fact that she is just using her doctrine as an excuse for bad behavior -- but I still think that it should be pointed out.
