What the pope said is biblical. The bible states that Jesus died for the sins of every person. You and I right now have an equal opportunity to go to heaven. An unbleiver who pursues living a moral and good life can be led to God who is the source of all good. In other words, in doing good they can find Jesus, the source of their salvation, but they still must eventually believe. No change in doctrine there, but something that has not always been clearly emphasized or understood by many christians.
