I agree that any kind of direct question is inappropriate, and I am not sure that I would be comfortable asking in an indirect way. However, I would like to avoid another boss who when he hears about some one mocking a church (not his church specifically, and not from an obviously atheistic point of view) gives an uncharacteristically angry response along the lines of "I guess he will find out when he is burning forever."
