Pat, a 17-year-old from Azusa, California, has given an incredible, inspiring speech at the Trangender Law Center’s summit for future leaders.
An outspoken advocate for her state’s School Success and Opportunity Act (AB 1266), she wants to ensure transgender students are given a fair chance to fully participate in all programs at school.
Pat, who was raised in a Catholic family, came out as transgender in 2011.
I went from being this smart, shy boy in class to finally being the outspoken girl I knew I always was,’ she said.
Even when she was homeless, hitting rock bottom, she was a 4.0 student.
She may not have had the money to wear makeup or the clothes she wanted, being forced to wear hand-me-downs from male cousins.
But Pat took inspiration from the late Princess Diana.
‘She ignored what a princess was supposed to do and did what her heart told her to do. So I vowed to myself, I will be the Princess Diana of our generation,’ she said.
Pat was the student body president, was a part of every club she could join, and even ran for homecoming queen.
And she is working on her dream of going further. This fall, she will major in political science at New York University. And after that, hopefully she will be on her way to becoming President of the United States by 2035.
She added: ‘I think the secret of life, like Diana said, is not to lead our lives by our head but by our heart.
