Abraham Lincoln had marks against him in his military record (can't find the source quickly) and as president :
Quote:So, on December 26, 1862, the Great Emancipator ordered the largest mass execution in American History, where the guilt of those to be executed was entirely in doubt. Regardless of how Lincoln defenders seek to play this, it was nothing more than murder to obtain the land of the Santee Sioux and to appease his political cronies in Minnesota.http://www.danielnpaul.com/PresidentAbra...ished.html
However, We don't discount him as a leader nor bar him from the face of our money.
Why? Well the good of Abraham Lincoln was the willingness to bow to the abolition of slavery. Furthermore Abraham Lincoln did not stake his position from the unverifiable words from his god, so his truthfulness was not in question, his character played no part in freeing the slaves beyond his position as president. Lincoln did not emancipate the slaves in order to be a hero or to be beloved and adored by mankind, he simply made the presidential order with his political convictions. His legacy was not impeached by his sordid history because it did not relate to the important issues that made him famous.
Now lets compare that to theists.
Ted Haggard was a preacher whose initial legacy was his effectiveness as a godly leader and voice for jesus. When he was found to have lied and cheated with homosexual activity, his legacy was IMPEACHED because his claims of being close to god and telling his flock the truth about what god told and led him to do or say were not compatible with his lying and homosexual activity. It did matter about his personal life because his claims are that his personal life was a "walk with jesus." It did not matter that all men sin and are tempted, because a PATTERN of lying and deceit was revealed to the people who judged that his walking was definitely not close enough to jesus to warrant him being a leader.
Now to Harvey Milk, Harvey fought for Gay rights. The basis of his fight for equal rights was that it was unfair to mistreat the gays, not that he was such a great person and that people should follow the great example of his life. No, the charges pushed by Harvey stood entirely on their own and Harvey's legacy was to fight for other people's freedoms and equality, not just his own. That legacy is not impeached or thought of as "not real" because of his purported unsavory personal sex life.
