Prior to the invention of the (scientifical) lightning rod, churches, as usually the tallest structure in town were preferentially struck by lightning. Atheists/agnostics of those early times took delight in pointing out the town brothel would survive the storms intact, whereas the tallest and grandest steeple in town would suffer repeated strikes.
So, where I'm heading with this is, it is much more interesting in the world when god zaps a church instead of a disgruntled parishioner.
