Um if your arguments are solid, then having a public debate should not hurt your arguments. I have been at this for 13 years and have seen this tactic before. You are trying to find someone you think is easy prey you can pick off out of the herd and isolate them.

You want a one on one debate do that, but it should not matter if it is done in private or public. Arguments that are provable don't need to hide behind anything.
