Agreed, taken as a social contract the umma is a seductive idea. It appeals to human beings very broadly - like all claims engineered to cast a wide net. I can see how the experience of a community is persuasive (especially relative to some whacko spitting out religious claims in a vacuum)...at the very least, community is real and can be experienced while djinn are, well, not.
