It's not just about making her happy, though. My cat has been climbing screen doors and windows since she was a tiny kitten. She will, like I've said now a few times, literally rip my house to shreds... and she doesn't kill things. She actually hangs out on the back porch, and rarely wanders. It's the other cat who (rarely) kills things, and I refuse to let my house get ripped to shreds for three or four small animals.
Sounds like you know your cat well. I'd let a cat outside if it wasn't destructive. My brother's cat lives in doors but will go outside when they do sometimes. It sticks around mostly because it is old and the neighbor's cats would kick its ass if it jumped the fence.
