They may have different concepts of him, but they did believe in a supernatural god - even as the understanding of our natural world expanded.
Why don't you look at it from a more reasonable perspective? Ancient people used to believe in gods and goddesses because they just didn't know any better. They didn't have access to the level of education we have now.
