That's generally the line that religion offers us in it's defense, sure. Did you ask the guys with the AK's whether or not they thought the guys in the ditch shared their religious beliefs? Uh-huh........
To remove some of the hero and mythmaking with regards to combat, and speaking from experience. Surviving a firefight is less about guts than it is about the number of rounds thrown downrange. There are a finite amount of projectiles in a finite space. As the rate of fire increases the ratio of space filled by projectiles increases. The more people fill that space, and the greater their "target capture" or "sight picture" relative to the angle of enemy fire determines whether or not they get hit by a random or non-random round. In general, insurgents open up with an overwhelming rate of fire (a tactic they cribbed from us, to put it bluntly) and if that doesn't work, they just fade away. All the tanks and guns and guts in the world isn't exactly going to secure you a victory against a tactic like that (which we should know well enough from experience).
As another way of explaining this, take a look at medal of honor recipients. Overwhelmingly post-humous. They had guts oozing out of their eyeballs, completely fearless. They were, to a man - for a brief period of time - hateful spirits of violence moving across the battlefield annihilating their enemies almost by accident. And yet - they are still dead.
I suppose, in short, I'm pointing out how little you seem to know about the realities of armed conflict.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
