We stood down from 1946-1949, and began to approach pre-WWII levels. American armed forces went from tens of millions on active duty to hundreds of thousands. The Cold War rearmament and buildup didn't start in earnest until after the start of Korean War, and didn't reach near national mobilization levels until Kennedy Administration.
You sure about that? According to the information I have, yes, we stood down between WWII and Korea, and peaked at about 3 million active duty personnel in 1970 (compared to 12 million in 1945). Today it's closer to a million and a half.
According to what I've found, we haven't come close to approaching WWII mobilization levels.
