In my town - a PERMIT is required for anyone to go door to door for ANY reason. The person's must apply for the permit in person and provide proof of who they are - and their purpose to canvas. Their names - addresses and phone numbers - as well as those of their parent organization is required to be revealed and it is checked before the permit is issued.
Non - profits get the permit for free - but must provide the same information.
People have gone top the front door and claimed to have been with a religion - while others go to the back door and rob the house.
So - when they do come to the door - I ask to see their permit - and when they claim they do no need one - I call the police in front of them.
However - simply saying to them that you do not believe in religion - since NO GODS can be proven to exist - and unless they have the GOD with them in person - they are just crooks - generally get them off my property.
