Opposition to same-sex marriage based on religion marks that believer as a bigot who ignores their own dictate that their god is to do the judging. It is an arrogant act of hubris wherein the assume the mantle of the deity they're claiming to speak for, instead of letting him handle it. Perhaps they're afraid that god's "mysterious ways" don't include a clause regarding their hobby-horse?
