I'm going to stick up for mo3 a little here. This link shows what he is talking about. The Qur'an itself does not condone making war against anyone unless they attack you first. Just as with the bible(s), verses are often taken out of context and appear to condone violence, but placed in context, that violence is supposed to only be in self defense.
Liberal / Progressive / Moderate Muslims face the same problem that Christians face. Extremism. Just as there are extremist Christians that chant "God Hates Fags" at certain funerals, or blow up abortion clinics... there are extremist Muslims that take Jihad against the infidels very literally and justify it by claiming that we (the Western Devils) started it. The extremism in the Muslim religion is far more 'extreme' than it is in Christianity, but it wasn't always that way. Christianity was once the scourge of the earth, responsible for some of the worst atrocities in history. Islam is simply behind the times. All three of the 'holy books' can be interpreted to support almost anything you want if you get creative enough with your interpretations.
mo3... We do not hold misconceptions about this. Maybe the religion does not specifically condone terrorism or the mass murder of innocents... but it is being done in the name of Islam. That is a simple fact. My question to you is this... what can those like you do about it? Will these extremists listen to you if you ask them to stop? Can you civilize them?
