I would assume people who really wanted to help others wouldn't really care if they went to church or not. It's not the least unusual for those offering aid to have ulterior motives. The church has one. And you got it in one, they want to: 1) convert people; and 2) help believers like themselves.
Assuming they really wanted to unconditionally help others doesn't coincide with the history of the Christian Church.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
