Really? What does a marquee player in the NFL, on one of the NFL's major market teams, who represents the NFL, have to do with the NFL?
The NFL has a personal conduct policy. They take action to protect their image, because the NFL is a multi-billion dollar business. They suspend people for a bevy of things, regardless of the legal action taken---so long as the player's personal conduct is detrimental to the league. Case in point: Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault, but never charged by the police. He served a 4 game suspension.
The NFL will protect its image. So Ray Rice punching his fiance unconscious has a lot to do with the NFL.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
