They have to act within contractual limits, and it seems to me that Rice has a case that the league has acted well beyond its powers. He may decide to suck it up because he wants back in, and his only hope is to play the contrite villain. But if he wanted to, he could sue and possibly get the league to admit that they had access to the interior video, which would be a disaster for the NFL. As it is, Roger Goodell is facing a growing number of calls for his resignation or firing over the way this was handled.Well said. The decisions from the league seem arbitrary to me. Or at least those being made by the commissioner. I can't see any method or guiding principle at work in Mr. Goodell. He drops the hammer on Josh Gordon for testing positive for marijuana in a year long suspension, dishes out a 4 game penalty to Robert Mathis (fertility drug), but then only hands Jim Irsay a 6 game suspension/$500k fine for getting arrested for OWI while in possession of 2 laundry bags of pills and $29k cash.
I think fighting it or suing will all but guarantee his permanent ban. But if Ray Rice does some charity work/donations, keeps his head down and waits, he will be back when this blows over. If Pacman Jones and Michael Vick are still around....
