It's because in the sims 4 you are able (apparently) to chose the sexual orientation, whereas in the sims 3 or 2 you could make people have homosexual relationships but they'd still be able to hold on to heterosexual ones - I don't even know if gays could get married in the sims 2. This means you can create a characters who is only attracted to same sex people. Seriously, +18?
I agree with you on the religion part, I think Russia has a mentality problem, but since the cold war I don't think religion plays a big role, I remember seeing some statistics somewhere that show Russians don't even consider religion to play a big role in their lives
