The thing about music is that it is as much communication as it is artform.
What that means is that no matter how aesthetically pleasing, or hideous, a particular song is, if it communicates to the listener in their own emotional language about their feelings at the moment, it is doing its job. Kids like Justin Beiber or whomever because those songs speak to their concerns ... the same reason I like Soundgarden or John Coltrane -- the music speaks to me, in a language I get, about matters that are important to me.
