Much of the OT is devoted to trying to explain suffering. It's a venerable philosophical cause. The problem is, the OT's explanations aren't much better than "because." In Job the answer really appears to be "because." In later books, it's because Israel turned from god. I like "just because" better. At least the book itself doesn't blame Job, even if his so called friends do.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
