I haven't the faintest clue. Though I suspect it has to do with male agression really. Of course another trend I have witnessed at times is girl being told by their mothers they can't do that career or have to behave this way. Though I will truly never understand how someone could cling to non sense, let alone use it bash their kids dreams.

Quite possibly, one thing to note is that neurological differences and disorders are less common in women and less severe. In fact that could explain part of what I'm seeing here, especially in the sciences. See asperger and high functioning autism are usually less prevelant in females then males. It's very well known that people with ASD's (Autism spectrum disorders) tend to do very well in the sciences, if simply by having a neurological make up that is better geared towards systematic study and mathematics then it is towards social settings and interaction.
