Yet you're supposed to read the bible. I'm always amazed how that works without asking the obvious questions.
For a long time, you weren't supposed to. The catholic church had latin mass, there were no bible translations into the common tongue, and they edited catechisms which would interpret for you what to think about it all. That changed with lutheranism and protestantism of course, but it's a later add on afaik.
