For my part, I think it was a good place to start. I am not sure where your opponent is going to take this though. To alpha male's point, the wording of the debate question is not your fault as I am to surmise that your opponent agreed to the terms. I am surprised he did not want to narrow the focus of the discussion. I can only surmise he is unfamiliar with debating or at least the topic at hand. It could also be he really does not believe evolution on any scale occurs, which is just foolish. There are some interesting discussions to be had within the general theoretical framework including punctuated equilibrium vs gradualism, change resistance, etc. Of course the evidence for the general theory is overwhelming.
