The reason for this is because some of the differences are massive, like for example the difference between a pentecostal and a eastern orthodox christian. Stick the two in a debate the only thing they will agree on is that jesus was a god figure. On the other hand take the northern baptists and atlantic baptist convention. They believe pretty much the same things with some small exceptions lately. The only real difference is that the Atlantic convention uses a gass roots democratic style of local self governance.
So if we think of religions like the tree of life then abrahamic religions would be one class (like mammals are) and each ending denomination would be its own seperate species.
Seems like making the Christers in the 39,999 schisms that are not The One True Faith paranoid, unsure, and doubtful would trump your point about the analysis being simple.
