Let me offer a possible reason why:
It may not be due to religious beliefs leading to better mental health, but rather that most atheists do not learn to properly cope with whatever crises they may be suffering from due to their lack of faith. So the solution isn't, IMO, "more religion" but rather "address the issue of how atheists think and feel about life and such".
