Worse than the ad-hoc hypotheses are the ad-hoc statements. They miss out the maybe, and just assert that some ridiculous scenario did actually happen. The only backup seems to be that it must have happened that way, because otherwise what they believe is wrong.
To them it's always better to make up one more thing than to think.
