The missions to mars give valuable insights into other planets. Mars is the first planet we ever started to explore and even now with so few missions it has pushed planetary science far ahead.
The one to the comet gives insights into what makes up a comet. We didn't have that before and it's a giant step for science.
To learn more about the universe sourrounding us is never wasted money. Unproportionate military budgets on the other hand might fit the bill nicely.
