Sounds like damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. To us of course it's better to be viewed as an apostate than all the other stuff, but he's supposed to care more for a soul he can't prove he has than anything else. This is the worst thing about religion. If you change with the times, you're betraying the lord. If you don't then you're betraying society.
