In Germany, and especially the east where this thing originates, people are not very religious on average. What they think is threatened is the "cultural" stuff that is loosely associated with Christianity in Germany. The "way of life".

The ones I went to school with were, so surprisingly, perfectly nice people. Even their parents were perfectly nice people. The kind of people you would want to drink an ayran with, as someone recently joked. To imagine that they let their daughter talk to me and stuff. Mindboggling.
Most people of any faith are nice.
It's the ones that take it seriously you have to watch.
