I had two uncles neither believed in God, they didn't go to church. They were good family men and good providers. They didn't hate religion they just didn't want to hear it.
Do we need to dig up the Billa Maher stand-up slip, where he ridicules people that say "Why can't you just let people believe what they want? It's not like it hurts anybody."?
People have done many repugnant things in the name of religion. You don't have to be religious to be an evil person, but religion has a record of convincing otherwise good people to do bad things. Not the least of which is parents abandoning their children because someone convinced them their child was a witch, or their child came out as gay, transgender, atheist, and so on. Religion is a repugnan institution that holds people back more often than it lifts them up.
